Promising Pink

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 11:52 pm

I’m fairly certain that Kali is going to have babies. For about a week now I’ve thought her tummy felt pregnant and tonight when I checked, her nipples have turned pink. Yay! Kali and Fin babies! Their due date is April 20th so I’ll be counting the days.

As for the current babies, here are some shots from yesterday evening’s photo session — along with the standard three week whine — I HATE taking pictures of three week old kittens. :-) I tried to get a pictures of the three of them together, but that was a dismal failure. Oh well. Next week? Don’t count on it… they won’t want to watch teasers until five weeks, so the first litter shot will probably happen then.

Besides updating my website last night, I also posted five week pictures of McCoy and Keona’s kittens at Red Canyon. Stop by and see their latest pictures. And Deb posted some pictures of her kittens on the AZWegie site over the weekend. We are still waiting for Keegan to deliver her babies, but that should be soon.

Scarlet’s Babies

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 3:47 pm

A rare Sunday post… But I’m on my lunch break and since I received some darling pictures of Scarlet’s babies (AZWegie Scarlet — daughter of Keegan and McCoy) I thought I’d do a quick post and share a couple of them with you. Scarlet had seven babies — six red boys and a lone torbie girl. She and her sister Fantasia are sharing mom duties and the kittens are doing well.

Keegan hasn’t had her kids yet, but today is her due date, so maybe there will be more news later today. I’ll share news when I have it. In the meantime, enjoy these shots of Scarlet and her kids, along with Fantasia and the whole gang.

Another Change of Scenery

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 12:11 pm

And Dawnie wasn’t very happy about it.

At two weeks or so, I move the kittens from the room where they were born (now my office/hippo room) into Ken’s and my bedroom. It exposes them to more of the household commotion and we talk and play with them more. So last night, after taking their two weeks pictures (a day late — sorry!) I put them in a basket temporarily, put clean blankets in the kennel and moved it to our bedroom.

Dawnie sat in the basket with the kittens, looking put out about all this. When I scooped up all three kittens and took them to our bedroom across the hall, she followed me, meowing the entire way. “What are you doing? Where are you taking my babies? Bring them back! I don’t think I want them over there! Mom, STOP!”

I put them in the kennel and she curled up around them, protecting them from the crazy lisa-mom. Who knows what I’d do next?

I went back in my office to pick up and she followed me back. She wandered all over the room, inspecting. Maybe there was still a good place for her kittens there. She checked out the space under the desk — after all the babies were born there — but I’d put some things there and it did not meet with her approval. She considered the closet. She looked at the bed. In the end, she went back to our bedroom and spent some more time with the Valentines.

But every time I went in the office last night and this morning, she’d jump up and run in there with me. I’m pretty certain she’s still thinking that’s where the fur babies belong. But, alas for Dawnie, the kittens will stay in our bedroom for the next five weeks or so.

Basia is glad the kittens are out of my office, though. She’s been rather unhappy about being exiled. She was in the habit of running in the office with me in the morning to get some cuddles before I left for work. But with Dawnie and the kittens in there, I haven’t let her come in. She’d pretty much given up in the last week. But this morning, knowing that the little family was now in our bedroom, Basia was lying expectantly on the floor right in front of the door to my office when I came out of the bedroom. Cuddle time!

I spent last night trying to get some website work caught up. The two week photos of the Valentines are on my website. I have a few bonus shots I’ll post here tomorrow (if I remember) but at least you can see the babies on the website with their eyes open. I updated the RedCanyon site with four week photos of the Crown Jewels. I also added three week photos to the individual kittens’ pages and added links to a couple more YouTube videos for the kittens. I added a few new pictures of Lucy’s kittens (the Anniversary litter) to the ForestKatz site. But I didn’t add new ones of Tori’s kids. I know I have some somewhere… but now I need to remember what I did with them!

I also started copying the photos of the Joyful litter and Fire and Smoke to CD for their owners. I might get them done and in the mail this week. I know, it’s about time!!!

One last thing I’m working on is a form for the NSR USA so people can submit pedigrees of their Norwegian Forest Cats to the pedigree database — or correct a pedigree that is already there if they find an error. I believe this will be an awesome resource for NFC breeders. Thank you to NSR USA, Sue Shaw, Greg Watts, and all those who are working on getting this database populated with pedigree.

Valentines One Week Report

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 1:26 pm

The Valentines are one week old now and new pictures are on the website. I wasn’t overly excited about any of the pictures — hard to get really cute photos of kittens at this age — so no bonus shots, except this one of Tanith doing her best to ignore me and the camera. It was nap time, and she was going to take a nap no matter what I did!

tanith is sleepy

One week weights are excellent:
Carwyn – 8.2 oz / 234 gr
Tanith – 8.6 oz / 243 gr
Taavi – 7.7 oz / 220 gr

Today they are all over eight ounces — Tanith still leading the piggy parade at 9.0 ounces. Little Miss Tanith seems to be very popular. I’ve had several inquiries about her, including one from a fellow breeder, so she’s on hold as we wait to see if she develops into a show and breeding quality girl. I have some other inquiries that I need to respond to — please be patient with me!

Brenda took new pictures of the Crown Jewels last night that she is going to send me tonight for the Red Canyon website so I’ll probably be adding them tonight. If you’d like to see the three week pictures of those cute babies, check tomorrow for the latest. Brenda has also had me post a link to a YouTube video of the kittens playing. You can find that link on her Kittens page, down at the bottom after the kitten pictures.

Also on tonight’s agenda are some updates to the ForestKatz website . New pictures of Tori’s kids (including a little torbie Queen of Everything in Training) and Lucy’s kids. There are still three kittens from Lucy’s litter (the Outlaws) available as well as most of Tori’s litter.

I’m still waiting for news about the arrival of kittens to the AZWegie family. Fantasia (who looks a LOT like Dawnie) was also bred to Gabe, so these kittens may look a lot like the Valentines. They think she is having at least six babies, maybe more. Following in her mother Keegan’s paw steps as a “fertile nymph” as Deb says. :-) Yes, it’s kitten season all over.

Cute New Picture

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 4:55 pm

The Valentines are doing well — all gained weight again. Dawnie is becoming more comfortable with motherhood and has been leaving the bed when all the babies are asleep so she can stretch out and nap in comfort.Usually, though, she jumps right back in the bed when I come in the room so it’s been hard to get a photo of just the kittens by themselves. However, yesterday evening I was updating Brenda’s website with two week photos of the Crown Jewels and Dawnie must have decided I wasn’t paying attention. So while she was napping on the floor, I grabbed the camera and took a few pictures.

valentines 1 day

I hope everyone is enjoying the kitten cam. I can’t see it at work :-( because streaming video is blocked. I’m feeling very deprived! But nonetheless, I’ll turn it on every day for all of you.

In other LostWoods insanity, Kalispell picked this weekend to finally go into heat. At first Fin wasn’t much interested in her, but he changed his mind. I think he was getting tired of her swatting him and was making sure this wasn’t some trick on her part. I have hopes that she’ll get pregnant and we’ll have another litter in about 9 weeks. Cross your fingers!

Announcing the Valentines

Filed under: Cats, NFCs — lisa @ 4:13 pm

I’ve pretty much announced the arrival of the Valentines everywhere but here on the blog. So I guess I’m going to have to make that up to all of our faithful blog readers in cyberspace. Some extra pictures maybe? The story of me being stressed and upset — and maybe the answer to why there are three kittens, not four? Let me think about that…

First, if you hadn’t already seen the announcement somewhere, early in the morning of Feb 14, Dawnie gave birth to three little Valentines.

Carwyn (blessed love) – Red tabby & high white boy – 4.0 oz / 114 gr
Tanith (goddess of love) – Black torbie & high white girl – 4.3 oz / 122 gr
Taavi (beloved) – Red tabby & white boy with white tail tip – 3.9 oz / 110 gr

The babies are doing very well. They all gained weight in the first day. As I’m writing this, they are all taking a break from the milk bar and are sleeping contentedly with Dawnie. You can watch them on the Kitten Cam. Right now they mostly eat, sleep and wiggle a bit. But I can watch them for ages because they are so pretty and sweet! Last night I could hear them purring as they nursed — it always melts my heart to hear tiny, tiny babies purr.

Dawnie is doing well, too. She’s very protective. She growled at me this morning when I stole the kittens one by one to weigh them. Tanith was crying and Dawnie was lying in the bed with the boys, growling her displeasure. But except for not wanting me to take the babies, she’s happy to have me pet her and sit close by admiring them.

Finally seeing these babies and seeing them alive and nursing and doing great is such a relief! Here’s the story… On Tuesday night I saw a small amount of mucus discharge from Dawnie’s vagina. Nothing to worry about, I didn’t think. Although it was more yellow than pink, it didn’t have a bad odor and sometimes the mucus plug is yellowish or even greenish. On Wednesday, there was a litttle more — still not much. Thursday, same story. But no signs of Dawnie going into labor, which I’d expect within 24-48 hours of her expelling the plug.

On Friday morning I took Dawnie in the see Dr Jennifer in case I was missing something. Dawnie was still eating, drinking, usng the litter box, and stealing the hippo toy from the shelf to play. Her temperature was about one degree below normal so most likely she was not developing a uterine infection. And the drop in temp is also a sign of impending delivery — usually within 12-24 hours. So Friday evening and over night into Saturday I was really expecting her to start labor.

About 2 in the morning Saturday, Dawnie was up and around, washing herself a lot and going back and forth from the bed where I was sleeping (sometimes sleeping) and the birthing bed. (BTW, Dawnie decided that place she would have the babies was under my desk. So I moved her bed there and she has been quite happy with that.) But no contractions, no labor. On Saturday morning I’d gotten up and gone downstairs for a little bit. When I came back up to check on Dawnie, she met me at the door, ran to her bed and started purring. Aha! Time to have babies! I sat by her for awhile and after about an hour, I thought I saw a contraction. But nothing more after that. I’ve decided that it must have been wishful thinking and me being tired of sitting on the floor with Dawnie. I finally went and got dressed for the day, then went in and out of the room checking on her.

The stressful, upsetting part is that the discharge had gotten more frequent. Still no real signs of infection — no odor and more the consistency of mucus — but I was worried about the amount and the constant flow. I’d check Dawnie’s rear end, wipe away the mess, talk to her, and go do other things while I tried not to worry. By Saturday night I was a raving nut case and cried when I talked to Brenda on the phone. Cried and got in an argument with Ken. (Hey, honey — again I’m sorry I’m such a lunatic!) I was absolutely convinced that Dawnie was losing all the babies.

About 2 in the morning I heard a noise and got up. There they were — three little wet kittens, Dawnie still cleaning up Taavi. The first thing I did was grab the Snugggle Safe and run downstairs. While I paced back and forth waiting for it to warm, all kinds of thought were going through my mind. Was Dawnie done having babies? Were they okay? What did she have? :-) A long five minutes!

Then back upstairs to investigate thoroughly. I carefully took each kitten from the bed and weighed them.Great sizes for everyone. Easy to sex them — the reds had to be boys, the torbie a girl. Then I move them to a basket with the Snuggle while I quickly as possible changed the soiled blankets in the bed. Dawnie was still pretty much a mess, but the blankets get wet from the birth fluids during delivery and then get cold. So warm, clean blankets were in order. I wrote down the kittens’ information and tried to call Brenda. (She asked me to call — any time, day or night.) Then I shot off a note to her, Sondra, and Deb about the kittens, promising more info later. After watching the kittens and Dawnie for awhile, I went back to bed myself.

So where was kitten #4? Remember, the ultrasound showed four babies back in late December. Well… my guess… is that the fourth kitten did not continue developing. That may have been the cause of the discharge in the days leading up to delivery. As Dawnie’s cervix started to open, she expelled the only remains of what would have been a kitten. No, there was never any blood or tissue or anything that was even vaguely kitten-like. So I could be wrong. But cats do lose kittens during pregnancy so this is probably what happened to Dawnie’s fourth baby. Whatever happened, I am thankful Dawnie is okay and the three babies she delivered are as well.

Pictures, pictures, pictures… Okay, here are the pictures of the kittens I took yesterday. And one brand new, never been shared elsewhere, picture of Dawnie and her sweet Valentines.

Old Kitten News

Filed under: Cats — lisa @ 1:18 pm

No new kittens news, unless you count me seeing some signs that delivery might not be far away. :-) However, I do have some pictures of older LostWoods kittens to share and tell you about.

Yesterday I received some pictures of Leshya, now known as Lexi, from her owner. Leshya was from the New Companions litter and is almost five years old. Joan, her owner, also has a kitten from the first Rockatts litter out of Kimbry and Rain. Leshya was one of the smallest kittens ever born at LostWoods — only 2.6 oz — so it is especially nice to see her as a big, beautiful, and healthy adult.

Dr Jennifer also recently updated her blog with some new pictures of Fayne and the other cats at her house. She commented that Fayne is already almost the biggest cat there, despite being the youngest at 10 months.

Going home at lunch time to check on Dawnie. Basia (the brat!) insisted on running in the office this morning and hid from me so I couldn’t make her leave. Since I was already running late, I gave up looking for her and came to work. But I will be kicking her out of the room when I go home for lunch.

Well, that’s it for now. News as it happens…

Long Time, No Post

Filed under: Cats — lisa @ 1:45 pm

Hi again! Yes, I’ve been a slacker. Don’t you just hate it when I do that? But with babies due any day now, perhaps I’ll be here a bit more soon. I’ll try. In the meantime, various little bits of news.

First, the show in Portland was a lot of fun. We were benched across the aisle from Magic’s Connie-mom and her friends. Yes, Magic was there on Friday night for the congresses and on Saturday. But he pretty much made it clear Saturday afternoon that he was tired of being a show cat and Connie let him stay home on Sunday. He looked great and I really should have taken some pictures. Somehow, the camera never came out at all over the weekend.

Benched right next to us were Pam Butcher and Tracy Hisel of EndelosGlede in Washington. I’d “met” Tracy on the internet and they own one ofthe LostWoods grandkittens (Rockatts Echo of Endlelosglede) but this was the first time I’d met her and her mother, Pam, in person. We had so much fun and I look forward to seeing them more in the future.

As for the cats… they didn’t have as good as show as I might have hoped, but Basia did get one AB final and several Best of Breed ribbons in a highly competitive show. She was 3rd Best in Cats of the Forest (NFCs, Maine Coons, and Siberians) on Friday night. Natane was BOB in the Alter class a number of times, but alas, no finals. She was 2nd Best of the Cats of the Forest Alters. Talia was 6th Best in the Cats of the Forest Alters. But regardless of the awards — or lack thereof — I had a good time and it was wonderful to be back in the show hall. As a reward for the cats behaving so well, I bought them freeze dried turkey and freeze dried duck as treats, as well as a couple new toys.

Next on the list of random news… McCoy and Keona are the proud parents of a wonderful litter born on January 31 at Red Canyon. Sadly, the beautiful little torbie girl, Diamond, crossed the Rainbow Bridge when she was four days old. She was tiny at birth — only 2 oz — and despite lots of love and attention from Keona, Brenda, Grant, and a number of Brenda’s friends, she didn’t make it. The remaining four kittens are doing great and now have their eyes open. You can see their one week photos on the Red Canyon website, since the webmistress has actually been doing her job for a change!

Some good news for all you kitten cam addicts out there — I have the kitten cam (actually two for now) working so once Dawnie’s babies arrive you’ll be able to watch them. I’ll post the links after the kittnes are born.

Dawnie is doing well. She isn’t really showing any signs of nesting and settling, but with babies not due until Saturday it’s still a bit soon for that behavior. She is very loving and mostly seems content to be in the hippo room by herself. She doesn’t look like a “melon with legs” as someone asked me the other day. I think the reason her tummy doesn’t look as prominent as some of the other girls’ tummies do is because Dawnie is a big girl even when she isn’t pregnant. A lot of room to grow babies without it being so noticeable. But her sides do bulge out and her tummy is hanging way down now – no doubt she’s pregnant!

I put the link to the LostWoods Norwegian Forest Cats page on Facebook on the links page on my website if you’ve been trying to find it on FB and can’t.

Hmmm… I guess that’s about it for the day. Mostly just waiting for the kittens to make their appearance, so unless something exciting happens between now and then I probably won’t post again until they arrive. Babies! I can’t wait!

Snow Fun!

Filed under: Cats — lisa @ 5:44 pm

I’ve been meaning to post these photos for days, but I’ve been surprisingly busy this week. And if you’re on Facebook and are a fan of LostWoods or if you’re on one of the NFC yahoo groups lists, you’ve already seen them. but I know that’s not all of the people who read the blog, so here are some pictures I took over the weekend of the cats in the snow. Buzzy, after having been thrown in the snow when it was 6 below, was exempt from being thrown in the snow this time. Almost nobody else was, though. So here are some of the better photos of their snow fun. Well, fun for me. Not so much for them. Except Dawnie, who had to be enticed with the laser pointer before she’d come back in.

This evening we need to bathe and dry Talia, Basia, and Natane. It’s nights like this that make me wonder why I show long-haired cats. We leave tomorrow for Portland. I’m looking forward to seeing Heather, Patrick, Braysen, and Merrick, plus getting to show the cats. I’ve missed it.

Dawnie is starting to look pregnant. When I first picked her up from Brenda, I could feel that she was pregnant, but she really didn’t look it. But her tummy is starting to expand more to the sides and she’s already waddling a little bit. She’s very comfortable at our house now — and has been spending the nights upstairs in our room. She hasn’t joined the crowd on the bed, but she sleeps on the floor on my side. She and Natane have resumed their friendship and Dawnie seems very happy and relaxed.

Crenshaw in the Snow

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 2:12 pm

As promised… Pictures from Susanne of Crenshaw in the snow.

The dog sharing the fun is Norman, a Bernese Mountain Dog. Susanne breeds these magnificent dogs and currently has a litter of puppies living in her house. She is working on getting a puppy cam running on the internet. When it is available for viewing, I’ll be sure to let you all know. I’ll be doing a website for Susanne in the future, too. More chances to see Cren’s “siblings”.

Cren is quite interested in the puppies. He supervised the delivery and, according to Susanne, he stops by the whelping box often to inspect them. So when the puppy cam is up, you may see him from time to time, too. I wonder what he’s going to think once they are more mobile? They are just over two weeks old right now, eyes just opened, and they are starting to escape from the box. But the real fun is yet to come…

I’m still waiting on news about the arrival of Tori’s babies. While I’m impatiently waiting, I’m sure it’s much worse for Jim and Donna. The latest report I have is that after a day or so of nesting, last night Tori gave that up in favor of wanting to leave the bedroom to see if the other cats needed discipline. No sense lying around doing nothing when the Queen can be keeping her subjects in line!
