News & Brags

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 1:22 pm

First, a Kali update. Kali is doing better – no discharge in the last couple days. She’s still on antibiotics and will be for awhile, but later this week she’ll be going to stay with Fin until after she’s bred. Whenever that might be…

Second, Fantasia is doing awesome. She has her bladder control back and is getting around much better. Deb reports that Fantasia is able to move her tail more and can go up and down the stairs now, too. Here’s a quote from Deb’s email:

She was so proud of herself the first time she made it up the stairs that she immediately started yanking my pantleg and meowing… she never does that.  I just think she was so excited to be able to do it again, she had to make sure everyone knew that she is back in full force.”

Now on to a brag or two…

Beau became a Supreme Grand Champion Alter in TICA a few weeks ago. We thought he’d made it, but weren’t absolutely sure, so we waited to announce it until Brenda got the confirmation in the mail. Whoo-hoo! Beau is now a Grand Champion (as a breeding cat) in CFA and a Supreme as an Alter in TICA. We knew he was special from the first time we saw him.

Dawnflower earned her Champion title at that same show. Go, Dawny! Both of them will be shown in Denver the weekend of August 8th.

I also got a surprise notice from TICA in the mail the other day. Basia was the best Black (brown) mackeral torbie with white in TICA for the 2008-2009 show year. She was also the Best of Breed NFC in the TICA’s Northwest region. Others in the LostWoods extended family who earned RW and IW awards for the season were:

ForestKatz Aby N Disguise of Aradia (Fish’s baby) – 4th Best Kitten in the Mid-Atlantic region and 3rd Best NFC Kitten internationally.

LostWoods Majestic of Foresttales – 7th Best Alter in the Mid-Pacific region & 2nd Best NFC Alter internationally.

LostWoods Coyn – 10th Best Alter in the Southwest region.

ForestKatz McAllen (Torianna’s baby) – 3rd Best Kitten internationally, Best Kitten in the South Central region, 20th Best Cat in the South Central region, and Best NFC Kitten internationally.

ForestKatz Mr Wickett of KSNorskatt (Torianna’s baby) - 25th Best Cat internationally, 6th Best Cat in the South Central region, and 2nd Best NFC Cat internationally.

And while he’s not out of Fish or Tori, I’ll add a brag for ForestKatz Gabriel of AZWegie as the 5th Best Cat in the Southwest region and 3rd Best NFC internationally.

Yep, wegies kicked some butt!

Kali Update

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 10:22 pm

Kali is about the same today. She got her first dose of lutalyze this afternoon and tolerated it well. She’s still grumpy and obviously in pain — hates to be picked up — but she’s also active and more than happy to see me when I check on her or sit on the floor petting her. For a few days she’ll remain isolated for her own comfort and safety. I don’t want her hiding from me so I can give her the medications that she needs to get well.

I don’t really have a lot to say tonight, so I’ll just leave it at that. Pictures in the next few days, though. Promise!

And the Hits Keep On Coming

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 12:00 am

I was happy to get good news from Deb this morning about Fantasia. She had a good night was more active this morning, although she still doesn’t have bladder control. But she was steady enough to get in the litter box by herself and she’d found a toy that she took to Deb, wanting to play. Deb posted a comment to yesterday’s post, so if you haven’t read it, take a minute to do so.

But after that, the day took a downturn. I went into the pantry to get tea this morning and Kali was under the step stool. I greeted her and she didn’t respond, so I reached down and touched her tail, getting a growl in response. That is so not Kali. So I moved the step stool to check on her, picking her up. She was growling and obviously in pain. I then noticed she had some bloody discharge on her back legs and after a quick exam, I came to the conclusion that she has pyometra.

For the non-breeders reading this, pyometra (or pyo) is a uterine infection. Female cats sometimes develop it when they cycle too much without being bred. I’d been planning to breed Kali next month after Kefira’s babies were born — trying not to have too many kittens in the house at the same time. Now I’m kicking myself for putting it off.

Anyway, I called and took her down to the vet clinic. They fit in some x-rays which confirmed that she does indeed have pyo.

Oh, back to the pyo explanation… There are basically two forms — open and closed. In open pyo, the infection is draining from the uterus. Messy, but a good thing. In closed pyo the infection has no way to get out and almost always it requires a spay as treatment. With open, a combination of prostaglandin therapy and antibiotics is nearly always effective. The girl is then kept on a safe antibiotic until she is bred — usually as soon as she cycles again.

Kali has open pyo, as shown by the discharge I saw this morning. She is on two different antibiotics and the vets are trying to get the prostaglandin we need to give her to assist with the treatment. Many large animal vets have it on hand all the time, but small animal vets are less likely to keep it. So they’ve contacted another vet here in town and hopefully we’ll have it in the morning. In the meantime, the antibiotics should at least be keeping things from getting worse.

Kali is home and I have her confined to the laundry room for now. I went in there a little bit and she was sleeping on a blanket. I sat on the floor and petted her for awhile and she purred — much better than the growls I was getting this morning.

Now to close on a better note… A short, funny story about Buzz. Ken’s friend Rob is here visiting and has been putting his dirty clothes in a grocery sack in the guest room. About the middle of the afternoon, I heard the rustling of plastic and wondered what the cats were up to now. Moments later, here comes Buzzy into the living room dragging the grocery sack full of Rob’s dirty clothes. She was calling to her kittens with great pride, “I’ve killed something for you! Look what mama has killed!” The bag was bigger than her, but apparently it deserved to die… Cats!

Prayers for a Sick Kitty

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 1:00 pm

McCoy and Keegan’s daughter Fantasia — an absolutely beautiful and sweet kitty — is sick. Right now we don’t know what the problem is. Deb came home and found her paralyzed in her back legs, with loss of bladder control. She took her to the emergency vet and they did x-rays and bloodwork. The bloodwork showed a high white count, but the x-rays didn’t show any real abnormalities. Fantasia was exhibiting pain symptoms on part of her spine, so they thought perhaps she has meningitis. They gave her pain meds, antibiotics, and a steriod shot for the inflammation around her spinal cord.

Yesterday Deb too her to her regular vet who referred her to a neurologist. Yesterday afternoon they sedated her to do a spinal tap and myelogram. They still have not ruled out meningitis, trauma (although the myelogram didn’t show anything — it’s possible that the only thing left from the trauma is the inflammation), or lymphoma. They should have the results of the fluid testing sometime today.

Fantasia has regained some function in her back legs — she was able to walk yesterday afternoon, although Deb said she was like “Bambi on ice”. She’s still at the hospital and is alert and happy to be watching everything that is going.

Please say some prayers for Fantasia and Deb. I didn’t write about it here, but Deb lost her Maggie to a brain aneurysm last week, so she is already in tremendous pain. It just seems like almost too much to bear to think of her losing Fantasia, too.

As for me, I’m doing very well. Next week I’ll go back to work part time for a couple weeks, then full time after that. I get tired when I try to do too much — which is nearly always. :-) Okay, my amazing healing powers seem to be linked to my determination that I am not going to lay around waiting to get better — I’m going to get better RIGHT NOW! I am sensible about what I do — as in I avoid the lifting and twisting that would keep me from healing, but everything else is fair game.

Brenda and Grant were here this past weekend and it was great to see them. We did a little sightseeing — not as much as we’d have done had I been completely healthly, though. McCoy went home with them on Sunday. Now Ken’s friend Rob is here for a few days. So I’m busier than you might expect for someone who is recovering from surgery, but it does help pass the time!

Allegra and Seely now have homes. Allegra will be going to live with a couple here in Helena. I think she is absolutely perfect for them — the wife is especially in need of Allegra’s loving personality. Seely will be going to live in Idaho, probably sometime in September. We need to work out a time when we can meet his new mom and dad and between their plans for August and ours, it will likely be September before that happens.

Kefira is looking very pregnant. Two and a half weeks til the babies are due. Yes, the kitten cam will be back. She’s been something of a witch to poor Danica, but the past day or so, she seems to have calmed down a little. Hopefully, she’ll learn to co-exist peacefully with Dani, because I do not want to have to shut either of them away from the family. Dani is finally getting more comfortable with everyone, although she still thinks the best place in the house is the top of the refrigerator.

I’ll have some pictures later this week of Allegra and Seely. Right now I’m off to do some errands.

So Long, Corliss

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 10:04 am

My Corliss Cutie left yesterday with Lyz and Pete, his new mom and dad. They will be a great home for him and he has a big brother, Iggy, to help him get used to his new home. as promised, here are a few good bye photos.

goodbye-corliss-3.jpg  goodbye-corliss-2.jpg  goodbye-corliss-1.jpg

Buzzy was standing beside him, grooming him and saying goodbye as we talked. This morning, she was calling and calling for her kittens. I think she misses Fayne and Corliss and wonders why she can only find two of her babies. I told her they were big kids now and are all ready to be loved by other families. And that she can go back to being a carefree young woman for a little while. She’s already been acting like that. She’s silly and playful and loving… just like she was before she had to be a responsible parent.

Fayne’s mom has sent me a few cute pictures of him since he left. Rather than post them here, I’m going to put a link to Dr Jennifer’s new blog:

http://www.toloveacatblog.com

I’ll also add it to the blogroll on the side bar so you can find it again. The pictures are there, too. Fayne is fitting in very well with his new buddy, Lil Jerry. Just as we’d hoped, they have become friends in no time at all.

Brenda is on her way to pick up McCoy. She and her son, Grant, left yesterday, but ended up spending the night along the way ’cause she was tired and had a bad sinus headache. So I’m waiting for her to call and say she’s in town, so I can give her directions to the house. Should be any time now. They will stay for a couple days and visit. It will be nice to have them here. We’d originally planned a couple days of sight-seeing, but some of the things we planned aren’t doable for me right now. We’ll have to settle for some short, in-town stuff instead.

Goodbye, Fayne

Filed under: NFCs — lisa @ 11:10 pm

Dr Jennifer and Rick got home from Seattle today and Fayne is now home with them and his new furry family. The first report back says he seems to be adjusting well. Hopefully his new brothers and sisters will agree with that!

You know me… if possible, I like to get one last litter shot before the fur babies start leaving. So today I scooped them up from their naps and took pictures. I tried to put them all in the basket, but well, that ship has sailed. They don’t all fit! Guess I’ll have to use this basket for pictures when they are about half this size. :-)

together-for-the-last-time.jpg

It is a pretty good basket for just Fayne by himself, though.

fayne-goodbye-photo.jpg

Corliss leaves on Thursday afternoon. I think Allegra and Seely have homes now, so I’ll probably be posting their goodbye photos soon, too.

As for me, I’m doing really well. I have a doctor’s appointment tomorrow morning where I hope the doctor will agree with that. I still have an appalling lack of energy — needing to sit down and rest for an hour after walking to the mailbox, for example. But I’ll get that back as time goes on. I’m taking very few pills for the pain — only one all day yesterday. Two today, but I was trying to do to much and was reminded of why I’m supposed to be resting. :-( So I think I’ll go do that…

Home, Sweet Home

Filed under: Uncategorized — lisa @ 9:36 pm

I’m Home!

I had a very good night and morning at the hospital (as these things go) and thanks to me being almost off the pain meds, able to get up and walk around, eating exciting semi-solid food like applesauce, and spending a chunk of my time sitting in a chair rather than the bed my doctor declared herself pleased with my progress and agreed with what I told her Sunday night before surgery — I heal pretty quickly. She’d told us before surgery that 7-10 days was my possible hospital stay, but she though it would likely be about 5 days if I did well.

I’m not totally back to myself, of course, but I feel even better today than I did yesterday. I had the energy (and semi-functioning brain) to banter with my nurse, Penny, and cause her to declare that she wasn’t letting me go home because she liked me. She thought I should stay a couple more days because she’s working this weekend. I liked her, too, but not enough to stay. :-)

Ken took a picture of me with the Joyful babies after I got home. Terrible picture of me, but a picture that shows why I so wanted to be home.

im-home.jpg

So… the plan for the next few weeks is to let Ken and Jeremy handle all the heavy stuff — this is a heck of a way to get out of doing litter boxes, though — and get lots of rest so I can heal up completely. I’ll probably go back to work part time in a few weeks. I’m really hoping that it will only be 3 months before I’m declared healthy and ready for surgery number two. Not that surgery is something I’m looking forward to but the reason for it I am.

I’m going to try to get pictures of the kittens tomorrow — the last set of everyone. Fayne will be going to live with Dr Jennifer and Rick mid-week. Corliss will be going to Lyz in Missoula later in the week, too. Still working on homes for Allegra and Seely, but I think that might happen soon. I won’t mind at all having my darling little Allegra lap cat and trouble maker Seely-puss around a bit longer but they do need to have homes.

Enough for tonight. Need to call my parents and let them know I’m home. Then I think it’s about time to go wash up and get ready for bed.

Tales from the Hospital

Filed under: Other Stuff — lisa @ 4:53 pm

Sitting here beside my hospital bed giving the nurse, Jayme, a bad time. Okay, not a BAD time, but teasing a little bit about the having to ask me my name and birthday every time they changes one of my gazillion meds. Like somone might come in and want the Flagyl. LOL! Okay, someone might want my pain meds, but the dose isn’t very high, even if it is good stuff.

Everyone here has been friendly, efficient and competent. My room is nice — as hospital rooms go. And it has wi-fi. The wonders of modern technology to keep geeks like me happy. Probably the only downside is the constant parade of people to poke and prod me — usually within 15 minutes of me falling into a lovely sound sleep.

There was one other mildly alarming event… literally. On my second night here I’d just been poked and prodded and was at last drifting off when I heard a “ding!” I wondered if I’d accidently bumped the call button, but almost as soon as that thought occured, I realized the ding was accompanied by two other dings, then a pause, then repeated. ”ding, ding, ding!,,, ding, ding, ding!” The call buttons dings once, that’s it.

About then somone walked by and  shut my door and I further realized I could hear the distinctive “buzz, buzz, buzz!” of a fire alarm.

It is not particularly encouraging to hear fire alarms when one is basically immobile in a hospital bed. I think if I’d been seriously motivated, I could perhaps have made it to the door of my room in about ten minutes. Of course, I’d have expired right there, because that would have taken all the energy I had. Luckily it was either a test or a false alarm and the alarm was silenced. Still, not conducive to a peaceful, restorative night of sleep.

I’m doing a lot better today than previous days. The ghastly catheter is gone. I’ve taken a shower. I am allowed “full liquids” as in cream of chicken soup, orange juice, pudding, etc. A real step up from chicken broth and lime jello. But when you haven’t eaten in nearly three days, even broth & jello sounds pretty darn good.

My son Justin drove all the way from Denver to spend some time with me last night and this morning. He’s now continuing down the road to go see Heather & her family in Oregon. It was good to see him, even if the visit was short. Glad he finally made it all the way up here.

When Justin came in this morning he said the Basia is obviously looking for me all over — especially the hippo room/office. She’d probably still trying to figure out where Ken-dad took me and why she isn’t allowed to take care of me like she did on Sunday. I’ve asked repeatedly for a therapy cat — I think Buzzy or Allegra would be perfect — but Ken says no.

I think I’ll get to go home tomorrow some time. I hope… Now that I’m not needed the constant help and drugs that I’ve been getting here, I’d much rather be home where I have my stuff and my cats. It will be challenging — our bedroom is upstairs — but I’d still rather have to deal with that and be home.

I don’t remember everything I wrote the other day — drugs get in the way of a functioning brain — but I’ll give you the quick recap here. I suffered (an understatement – had to be one of the most, if not THE most painful things I’ve ever been through) a ruptured diverticulum on Sunday morning. Sunday afternoon, realizing that it was likely something serious that was causing the pain and a fever, I had Ken take me to the doctor at the urgent care clinic, who sent us on to the ER. After an exam and a CT scan, the ER doc broke the news to me that a surgeon was on her way in and I’d need surgery. During the surgery, about six inches of my bowels were removed. One end was tacked to the abdominal wall to be reattached later. The other section was routed through an opening (stoma) in my abdomen and I’ll have to have a colostomy appliance for the next 3-6 months. Then when the doctor thinks I’m healthy enough for surgery again, she’ll reattach everything. Yes, another fairly major surgery in less (I hope) than six months.

In the meantime, I’ll be off work for a few weeks, then probably back part time — hopefully working from home until I go back full time. Lots of kitty time!

I felt fine when I got up Sunday morning — this was unexpected and sudden. So any of you out there who have suffered through bouts of diverticulitis (I’d had two in the past two years) if your doctor recommends surgery to remove a section of bowel because they suspect weakness in the walls, take them seriously. You do NOT want to go through a rupture and an emergency surgery like this.

I’d like to thank everyone who has posted comments or written me privately with well wishes. I truly believe that prayer works wonders and I am thankful for yours. I also appreciate the offers of help and care packages. I don’t really need anything and since Jeremy has yet to find a job, I have him to be my cattery boy. It’s a bit extreme to go to these lengths to get out of litter box duty, though!

I know the blog is crashing for some reason and once I’m home and more together, I’ll try to figure it out. I thought it was something easy like a database being out of space, but unfortunately, I”m not that lucky. So I’ll need a somewhat working brain to figure this out.

CaT Scan

Filed under: Other Stuff — lisa @ 9:04 pm

Hello from the hospital where I’m recovering from emergency surgery to remove a part of my bowel due to a ruptured divericulum. Yeah, it’s just as fun as it sounds…

I woke up feeling fine yesterday morning, but just a few minutes later I felt a sudden pain in my abdomen.  I went back to bed for awhile, then got up and took a hot bath, took some Gas=X and laid back down again. Around three I took my temperature and was running a slight fever, so I asked Ken to take me to the urgent care clinic. They sent us on the ER at the hospital.  They did a CT scan gave me the bad news.

I had surgery about 9 p.m.  It went pretty well, but as with any surgery, I feel totally drained. Sore, of course, too. I’ll be ehre for 4-5 days unless I have complications. Then I’ll be off work for a few weeks, and go back part time for a few more weeks, probably.

So… the kittens’ 13 week pictures I planned to take yesterday didn’t happen.  I feel like I’m being cheated out of my last week with the babies before they start leaving. Basia was my shadow yesterday – she was takiing care of me, I think. I suggested Ken bring her to me here as my therapy cat :-) but he said no.

Okay, enough for now. Just thought I’d let you all know what’s going on with me.

Can We Get Some Air Around Here?

Filed under: Cat Care, NFCs — lisa @ 4:07 pm

It’s been a challenging week here at LostWoods. It started over the weekend with Allegra, followed by her brothers, getting upper respiratory infections. Allegra had some eye involvement with it, but the boys just had the sneezes and sniffles. I added l-lysine to their food and Allegra was getting eye meds. (She was just thrilled with that — not!) By Monday everyone except Fayne was doing better, but they were all getting a decongestant to help clear up the sniffles. Fayne wasn’t bad, but he was more congested than everyone else, so I added an antibiotic to his treatment.

In the meantime, Natane started sneezing and coughing. I thought it was just her coming down with the same thing as the kittens. When she showed NO signs of improvement I put her on the decongestant and antibiotic, too.

Tuesday night I thought all four kittens were better. Corliss and Allegra were nearly 100%. Seely was still sneezy. Fayne was still more congested than everyone else, but active, playful, and acting “normal.”

Wednesday comes along… Natane was obviously not better. In fact, she was refusing to eat and rarely moved from the bathroom except to cough. She was breathing out of her mouth and I started to wonder if she had pneumonia. She didn’t have the same symptoms as the kittens — no sniffles. No watery eyes. No discharge from her nose. Just lethargy and coughing.

Fayne, too, had regressed and was less active than normal. He was still eating, but he sounded more congested and acted less like the happy kitten he usually is.

Off to visit Dr Jennifer. Fayne was running a temp and was given sub-q fluids. We discussed switching antibiotics and decided to see how he was this morning. The good news today is that Fayne’s temperature was normal this morning and he’s once again a bouncing baby boy cat.

More good news is that Natane, too, is better today. The bad news is she has asthma. She received fluids, a steriod and a bronchodilator yesterday at the clinic and came home with me. We’ll be working to figure out what it takes to keep her in a stable, healthy state over the next few months, although she’ll probably be on some level and combination of medications for the rest of her life and I’ll keep emergency meds around in case she has an attack in the future.

When we got home yesterday she was already feeling a bit better, willing to walk around and drinking on her own. She was sitting up watching what was going on in the house rather than just lying on the floor looking miserable. This morning she had gone downstairs by herself and came to get a cat treat when I gave everyone treats.  She’s a pain in the rear end to get pills down, but she will get used it eventually. (I hope…) Whatever it takes, we’ll be giving her the best life we can despite the asthma.

Now you’re probably wondering — like I did — how common asthma is in cats. I haven’t done a lot of reading (yet!) but what I’ve seen so far says it’s about 1 in a 100 cats. Some suggest that the prevalence is increasing (in cats and humans) due to environmental pollutants. According to one reference I saw Siamese and Himilayans seem to have a slightly higher incidence.  One site you might want to visit if you’re interested in this topic is http://www.felineasthma.org/. I’ll add it to my links on the blog, too.

I hope when I get home Natane will be even better this afternoon. I am glad that Jeremy is home a good part of the time right now so someone is with her. Jeremy likes Natane a lot (even though he won’t admit it) and has been very concerned about her. So I feel fairly certain that if she were to have a problem he’d notice and let me know right away. Until she’s more stable, I’ll be nervous about leaving her alone for long.

In much happier news, I was seeing pink last week — and I don’t just mean Allegra’s eyes. Kefira is pregnant! Babies are due around August 8th. Yes, the kitten cam will be back. I know that all you addicts out there can hardly wait to get your fix.

And to wind this up for now, here’s a picture of Corliss. After all the time I spent with this little guy feeding him those first two weeks, he’s my special little boy. He has a home in Missoula and will be leaving in a little over a week. I’ll be even more sad than usual. For once, I’m admitting I have a favorite in the litter. Although, I’ve also got to say, this litter is so cuddly and loving that it’s going to be really hard to let any of them go. Good thing there will soon be new babies to distract me. Anyway, here’s my Corliss cutie.
