Monroe Show News
I considered trying to do a blog post from my new Blackberry Sunday night, but wasn’t brave enough to deal with it… yet. Maybe once I learn how to use it a little better. (that could be years!)
Anyway, here’s the Buzz…
(see, Brenda, Buzz can be a good thing!)
Basia, aka Baby Buzz, had a great show for a little four month old wegie girl. She started out her show career in fine fashion with a 4th Best LH Kitten award in her very first ring. The judge told me Basia was going to be “very special” when I thanked her for the award. Buzz went on to final in the other three rings on Saturday and one ring on Sunday for a total of five out of the eight rings. Her highest placing was as 2nd Best AB kitten. Overall, she ended up as the 6th best kitten at the show. Immature little wegies often have a tough time impressing CFA judges at their first few shows so this was a wonderful showing for our baby girl!
Also impressing the judges — and Smacking Finny’s butt — was our handsome McCoy (aka Smack.) McCoy took BOB in six of the eight rings over Fin and three other wegies. McCoy also got an impressive 2nd Best AB Cat in one ring — a fantastic placing for a “lowly open”. Brenda has McCoy in great condition and he is filling out and growing coat well. I was kicking myself for not taking my good camera with me to get some new pictures of him.
Fin was BOB in two rings and 2nd BOB in the other six, as well as Best NFC Champion in all the rings. He also got a final as 3rd Best LH Champion in one ring, so he earned 28 grand points toward his title. I’m going to work harder at putting some more weight on him. I don’t think he’ll ever be as big as a cat as McCoy is looking to be, but it would definitely help him in the ring to fill out and mature some more. He still looks like such a kitten to me.
The three cats (Fin, Basia, and McCoy) got along pretty well in the hotel room. Fin and McCoy do have the occasional moment of trying to show the other who is boss, but luckily it wasn’t ever violent — no claws or teeth involved — and they spent a good part of the time just co-existing, watching birds and playing with toys. Basia and her future sweetheart got along great and were playing together wildly on Sunday morning. They were chasing back and forth across the room. Basia would jump up on the corner of one of the beds and wait for McCoy to run by then throw herself down on his back. I guess she thought it was the only way to get the advantage considering he is better than twice as big as her. It was fun to watch the two of them playing.
Down in Texas, Cyra the Fish had another good show, with finals in 12 of 16 rings. Go, Fish! Keegan had fun at her show in Phoenix, but didn’t get any finals. However, one of the judges talked to Deb later in the day and said she’d have finalled Keegan if she’d been a little better groomed — something I blame on myself, for not doing a better job of teaching Deb about grooming — so Deb is going to work on it. I haven’t heard from Connie how Magic (Kheldar) did, nor have I yet seen a show report.

The fine art of show grooming is an on-going challenge for anyone, especially for Wegies. What makes it even more difficult is when one judge contradicts another! A judge told me that Beren had too much dead fur on his coat and it needed to be thinned out. Another judge at the same show said he had a beautiful, full coat!! What do you do?

Hi Debbie,
I think you need to use your best judgement on your cat. I don’t know what that judge means by “dead fur”… You do want a beautiful, full coat and I can’t imagine “thinning it out”. If you have some pictures, please forward them. I’d like to better understand what that judge ment by “dead fur”. Please remember that wegies are relatively new to the show circuit and many judges do not know their wegies as well as they should.

Hi Brenda,
I was somewhat shocked when that judge made mention of all the dead fur. This woman is an international judge and has been judging for 10 years. I dutifully “thinned out” Beren’s beautiful coat and took him to another show that she was judging. She still didn’t final him and when I asked her about the coat she said it was better but still had too much dead fur. At that point I decided she didn’t know what she was talking about and have left the coat alone. It will take all winter for it to get back to its previous state. Because I’ve only been showing for about two years I tend to take these judges at their word. Another one who is at almost every show in the area insists that Beren is too fat. Other judges say he’s not. It gets frustrating. I’ll try to get some new pictures of Beren in the next few days and email them to you.
